Joanna Clay is an artist that primarily works with acrylics and gouache paints. She loves to paint nature, plants, flowers, animals, and landscapes. She enjoys designing and illustrating repeats for fabrics or stationery. She’s inspired by the natural world, especially the Mediterranean and the Pacific, and her own travels often influence her color choices and the motifs within her work. She’s also inspired by maximalist interior design.

My name is Joanna Clay and I'm an artist, designer, and illustrator based in the historical city of Oxford. I have been creative for as long as I can remember and have always felt most like myself when holding a paintbrush. I find painting to be an incredibly rewarding practice, not only in the context of my career, but also for my emotional and spiritual health. Painting has always been my way of connecting with and making sense of the world around me, whilst simultaneously acting as a powerful form of self-expression.

My work is largely informed by my background in printed textiles, which can be seen through my bold color choices and frequent use of pattern. I often find that a trip away and a break from the everyday ignites a renewed passion and excitement for my practice. When I'm not working, I take great pleasure in being outdoors either on a hike, having a picnic with my husband or tending to my garden (with the company of my cat, Merlin, of course!). Interior design is another one of my passions, and I take great pride in curating a personal, cosy and welcoming space for friends and family to enjoy when they visit.

My work has been used by clients including The Victoria & Albert Museum, Flow Magazine, Design House Greetings, and Gussy Dup.
